Hostel Environment

Hostelling is a great way to make travel affordable, and it allows you to meet a wide variety of new people. Whether your travel itch has you making plans for an out-of-town weekend getaway or a long-term international voyage, hostelling is a great travel tool.
My own hostelling experience began with my first trip to Europe. I first stopped in London, where the hostels were bursting at the seams with travelers and beginning-of-the-trip energy. Because I was in the big city, I paid the "high price" of $20 for my accommodations-and I was happy to pay it. Each of the five London hostels had a waiting list that season. After being thrown into such a hubbub of energy, I gained a sense of the size and strength of this traveling community. I chatted with the other travelers, functioning through a haze of first-time jet lag, but didn't actually befriend anyone in this hectic environment...

Jackie Cochran: Traveling with the Stars

Through clear skies high above the desert landscape of Edwards Air Force Base on May 18, 1953, Jackie Cochran skillfully pushed her venerable F-86 Sabre fighter even faster, in search of yet another speed record. Older than 50 at the time, Cochran reached speeds greater than any woman had ever traveled, breaking the sound barrier and achieving another milestone in her already stellar career. She nudged the plane, slowing down, and returned from her breakneck journey to find the hard-packed runway. She coasted to the control tower in her moment of triumph - a moment that the tower, remarkably, failed to record. Without hesitation, Cochran hopped back in the plane and broke the sound barrier a second time so history could be written correctly...
